Commenting on the news that the Justice Secretary is to meet with the Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi in person, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP said:
"This decision is somewhat unprecedented. Nothing like this seems to have happened in the case of the Great Train Robber or the Moors Murders, for example.
"I fail to see what possible purpose this visit will serve. What exactly can the Justice Secretary learn by visiting Mr Al Megrahi in prison that he does not already know?
"SNP Ministers have a track record of allowing their passion for grandstanding and headline grabbing to interfere with proper procedure. This is one of the worst atrocities ever known in Scotland and must be handled properly."
