Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott MSP joined Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg and top Scottish Liberal Democrat Euro candidate George Lyon at Glasgow Airport to herald the success of the European Arrest Warrant and condemn Conservative opposition.
Tavish Scott MSPCommenting, Mr Scott said:
"Scottish police must be able to bring criminals back if they flee into
Europe. So far the European Arrest Warrant has done just that.
"It now takes on average 43 days to extradite a suspected criminal, rather than 18 months. This makes sure that justice is served quickly, makes our streets safer and helps families and communities move on with their lives.
"But the Tories, normally so gung ho about cracking down on crime, voted against the EAW. They're putting political dogma ahead of our safety."
George Lyon: top Lib Dem Euro candidateMr Lyon added:
"The Tories want to isolate Scotland, make us less safe by tying up the police and prosecutors in red tape so that it would take years rather than days to get back rapist and robbers on the run.
"Voting against measures that help keep our families safe is further evidence that the Conservatives have lost all touch with reality. It is
the act of a party comfortable at the lunatic fringe of Europe."
