Commenting after a debate in the Scottish Parliament on alcohol, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP said:
"The SNP Government had a false start on tackling alcohol abuse - not least by trying to subvert the parliamentary process. Before they fall at the first hurdle on their second attempt, they should think very carefully before including measures that could damage our economy and alienate the next generation.
"The reality is that the SNP's incompetence will cost us six months of totally unnecessary delay. We now know that they had not worked through the details of their policies. This is the same Government that wanted us to rubber-stamp mere regulations on this matter just this week.
"The scale of the challenge facing us is daunting. Liberal Democrats stand ready to work with the Government and other parties to make the right long-term cultural changes necessary to tackle Scotland's lethal relationship with booze."
