Commenting on the news that the Portman Group's Independent Complaints panel has rejected the complaint that Orkney Brewery's Skull Splitter beer encourages irresponsible drinking, Liam McArthur said:
"I am delighted that this ludicrous complaint has been rejected and that the Orkney Brewery can therefore continue to sell Skull Splitter, a premium product which has built up a fine reputation over the years.
"The Portman Group has important work to do tackling the misuse of alcohol caused by the irresponsible marketing of drink. The success of this work, however, risked being undermined by the threat posed to Skullplitter, an award-winning, premium product with an impeccable track record. No business can afford to have their market, built up over the years, undermined by the loss of a key brand name. Orkney Brewery should therefore never have had to face this ridiculous threat to Skull Splitter.
"I am sure that I will not be the only one welcoming today's news with a bottle of this fine beer. I am confident, however, that these modest celebrations will not lead to outbreaks of anti-social behaviour across Orkney or elsewhere in the beer-loving world."
