Liberal Democrat Public Health spokesperson Jamie Stone MSP has called for more to be done to support those out of work as the economic crisis deepens. This comes as the Samaritans warn that the current economic climate could lead to an increase in suicide rates.

Yesterday, figures showed that unemployment has risen by 20,000 in the last year. Mr Stone has joined the Samaritans in calling for extra support for the most vulnerable over the festive period.Jamie Stone MSP: Public Health spokesperson

Commenting, Mr Stone said:

"One of the highest risk factors for suicide is unemployment and with latest figures showing a huge rise in people out of work there is real concern that the credit crunch could claim the lives of vulnerable people who have lost their jobs. In the short term we must help support networks help those who are suffering the worst effects of the economic downturn.

"But with nearly one in ten Scots making daily use of anti-depressants we need to have a long term approach that targets suicide risk factors - depression, long term unemployment and substance misuse.

"This is a problem often keenly felt over the festive period but one that is best solved through a holistic approach. The Government has worked on identifying the main risk factors, this is to be commended.

"The Scottish Government and local authorities must now ensure that support networks are in place so that the most vulnerable in society can be protected from harm during these turbulent economic times."
